It is the sole issuer of banknotes in Canada . The principal role of the Bank of Canada , as defined in the Bank of Canada Act, is "to promote the economic and financial welfare of Canada." Today, however, it has a more narrow and specific internal definition of that mandate: to keep the rate of inflation between 1% and 3%. The head of the Bank of Canada is the Governor, who is appointed by the bank's board of directors.

The arts have flourished in Canada since the 1900s, especially since the end of World War II in 1945. During the mid 1800s, Cornelius Krieghoff , a Dutch born artist in Quebec, painted scenes of the life of the habitants (French-Canadian farmers). The abstract art group Painters Eleven, particularly the artists William Ronald and Jack Bush, also had a tremendous impact on modern art in Canada .
