Backstory

Arthas Menethil is the son of King Terenas king of Lordaeron, the northernmost Human kingdom, and is thus the crown prince of Lordaeron. He has a sister named Calia Menethil. Arthas was first introduced in the novel Day of the Dragon as a young boy. At the age of nineteen he was inducted into the Knights of the Silver Hand at the behest and with the sponsorship of the renowned paladin Uther Lightbringer. It is indicated in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne that he had once competed with Prince Kael'thas of the Elven Kingdom of Quel'Thalas to win the heart and hand of Jaina Proudmoore. As a Paladin

At the beginning of the first section of the single-player campaign, Arthas was battling orcs when he heard of a mysterious plague in northern Lordaeron. Arthas and Jaina Proudmoore journeyed northward in a desperate bid to outrace the plague, confronted at every step by a necromancer named Kel'Thuzad. The necromancer, apparently testing them, would always depart with cryptic remarks to Arthas about his eventual fate. Eventually Jaina and Arthas manage to slay Kel'Thuzad, but the plague, transmitted by infected grain, had already been distributed across the countryside by unwitting farmers and merchants. Arthas agonized over his failure to save Hearthglen as he fought the unrelenting tide of the Scourge who assailed the town, as many of the undead warriors had fallen to the plague just as he arrived. Arthas then decided to slay the entire population of Stratholme before the plague could take effect there, but Uther and Jaina refused to follow his order. Arthas rashly removed both Uther from command, resulting in the departure of many Knights of the Silver Hand, as well as Jaina's. Arthas and his remaining forces ruthlessly slaughtered the city's population in their sleep. During this time a Dreadlord named Mal'Ganis taunted Arthas as he converted some of the city's residents into the undead through the Plague. Arthas' purge became a race against Mal'Ganis'. In the end, Arthas prevailed and Mal'Ganis fled to the northern continent of Northrend, pursued by a vengeful Arthas. The Lordaeron insignia. ... One month later, Arthas arrived in Northrend with a small group of loyal followers. His travels lead him to encounter a group of stranded dwarves exploring the continent in search of a runeblade called Frostmourne. Arthas quickly enlisted their aid, and with the help of their leader, Arthas' old friend Muradin Bronzebeard, they cut through the Undead. Upon hearing that his father has recalled the expedition, Arthas hired mercenaries to burn the ships that he had used to sail to Northrend, effectively stranding his men. Arthas then accused the mercenaries of burning the ships. His army eliminated them, much to Muradin's astonishment. As the Alliance assault moved towards the citadel of Mal'Ganis, Arthas and Muradin took a force of men through monster-infested caverns to reach Frostmourne, hidden deep beneath a mountain. When Muradin and Arthas finally come upon the sword, the dwarf realized it was cursed and warned his friend. However, Arthas, consumed by rage and and a lust for vengeance, ignored the warning and took the sword. The ice around Frostmourne shattered and a shard of it killed Muradin. Arthas was unmoved by the dwarf's death, rejoicing at finally possesing the instrument of Mal'Ganis' destruction and remarking that the death of his friend was an acceptable sacrifice when weighed against the chance for revenge. Abandoning his warhammer, the prince took up the cursed blade and rejoined his men. He used the newfound power of Frostmourne to lead his army to victory over the Undead, and eventually faced Mal'Ganis in single combat. Arthas proved the victor, and Mal'Ganis found himself forsaken by his masters. Arthas then finally struck down his enemy, and fled into the icy wastes of Northrend. There, the last vestiges of his sanity were stripped away, and Arthas fully fell to the darkness.

As a Death Knight

Arthas is The Frozen Throne's icon.

Eventually, a black-clad Arthas walked through the streets of the Capital City of Lordaeron, while church bells rang out and flower petals fell at his feet, heralding the return of Lordaeron's conquering hero. But at his touch, the rose petals seem to wither. Flanked by two hooded figures, he entered the royal throne room, and knelt before King Terenas. Arthas rose, and unsheathed Frostmourne. Bewildered, King Terenas asked, "What is this ? What are you doing, my son?" Arthas answered, "Succeeding you... father." At this, Arthas ran the king through in full view of all. This event marked the end of the true human kingdom of Lordaeron. Image File history File links The_Frozen_Throne_icon. ...

At the beginning of the second part of the campaign, Arthas was greeted as a Death Knight by Tichondrius. He learned that upon taking up Frostmourne, he began to hear the voice of the Lich King Ner'zhul, who had forged the blade for the purpose of ensnaring a powerful soul. The first it claimed was Arthas', to which which Arthas said, "Hmph, then I'll make do without one." Arthas was instructed to gather together Kel'Thuzad's Cult of the Damned, then to recover the remains of the necromancer for resurrection. Upon doing so, he saw the ghost of Kel'Thuzad, who advised him not to trust the Dreadlords. Tichondrius instructed Arthas to retrieve a sacred urn to carry the necromancer's remains, and Arthas killed his once-mentor Uther Lightbringer, one of many paladins who resisted Arthas, to obtain it. Arthas then journeyed to the woods of Quel'thalas, the homeland of the High Elves. He battled his way through the Elven defenders, killing the Ranger-General Sylvanas Windrunner and subsequently resurrected her as a Banshee. Kel'Thuzad told Arthas that the plague had been an initial strike by the Burning Legion, a demonic army that employed the Dreadlords and had spent countless millennia rampaging through the Great Dark Beyond. Arthas and Kel'Thuzad next set their sights on the nearby Blackrock Orc Clan village guarding a demonic portal that would allow Kel'Thuzad to contact Archimonde. After assaulting the Blackrock Orcs and crushing them, Kel'Thuzad communicated with Archimonde, one of the Legion's mightiest leaders, who instructed the lich on how to open a portal allowing the demon into the world of Azeroth. Arthas and Kel'Thuzad assaulted the wizards' city of Dalaran and claimed the spellbook of Medivh, the Last Guardian. Kel'Thuzad used this book to summon Archimonde to Azeroth, whose first action was to destroy the entire city of Dalaran at once using an eldritch spell, which ended the second part of the campaign. Role in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne

The player next encounters Arthas during the third part of The Frozen Throne. After the downfall of the Burning Legion at the end of Reign of Chaos, Arthas journeyed from Kalimdor back to Lordaeron. Upon his arrival, he launched an assault against the remaining Dreadlords ruling over the ruins of Lordaeron's Capital City, and declared himself king. It is then revealed that before the story of Warcraft III even began, the Lich King pushed the sword Frostmourne out of the Frozen Throne so Arthas could find it. A fracture in the Lich King's icy prison formed during an earlier part of the Expansion, leading to his gradual loss of power over the Campaign as the Lich King's magic seeps out of the fracture. Arthas, his strength directly linked to the Lich King by his wielding of Frostmourne, suffers seizures and loss of strength. Regaining her freedom of will from the weakened Lich King, Sylvanas and her banshees rebel. Her dreadlord allies occupy the Capital City, and Sylvanas herself planned an ambush to kill Arthas and avenge her ruined homeland of Quel'thalas, but was foiled by Kel'Thuzad's intervention. Arthas escaped and headed to Northrend at the Lich King's summons. Waiting to meet him was a legendary king of the Nerubians, Anub'arak. Using their combined might, Arthas and Anub'arak descend into the depths of the ancient spider kingdom Azjol-Nerub, cutting through Illidan's Naga and Blood Elf warriors, as well as a company of Dwarves. Eventually Arthas and Anub'arak emerged at the base of the Frozen Throne. As Arthas reaches Icecrown, the Lich King channels his power into Arthas once more, enabling him to regain his strength. In a battle against the combined Naga and Blood Elf forces, the Undead managed to drive back the army of Illidan. In the end, a rejuvenated Arthas confronts Illidan at the base of Icecrown Citadel. A battle ensues and Arthas and Illidan fight each other fiercely. Eventually, Illidan is defeated and lies in a death-like state at the Ice Crown Glacier. Victorious, Arthas ascends to the Frozen Throne, ignoring echoes of voices from his past. The Lich King commands Arthas to release him from the Frozen Throne with Frostmourne. Obeying, Arthas shatters the ice prison encasing the armour imbued with Ner'zhul's spirit which then falls to the floor. Arthas picks up the helmet and places it upon his head. At that moment, the spirit of Ner'zhul and Arthas fused into a single mighty being. Arthas ceased to exist as a single being, and, one of the most powerful entities in Azeroth was born. He now resides on the Frozen Throne, and there he rebuilt the massive fortress around it, which is the house of a thousand undead warriors. His loyal vassal, Kel'Thuzad, commands the Scourge of Lordaeron, while Sylvanas with her Forsaken hold only Tirisfal, a small part of the kingdom. With his untold new powers, it is only the matter of time until the Lich King will seek to destroy all the living of Azeroth. Presumably, he will continue to bolster the Scourge to make sure that there is no threat left from his former creator, the demon lord Kil'jaeden and the Burning Legion.

While some fans suspected that Arthas had killed Illidan, Blizzard has repeatedly assured them that this is not true and that the original script for that scene would have made it clear that Arthas had simply beaten him into submission and humiliated him. As a result, Illidan is present in the expansion pack to World of Warcraft, World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, having fled to Outland to lick his wounds and build a bulwark against the Lich King/Arthas, the Scourge and the Burning Legion.

In the Eastern and Western Plaguelands the Scourge appears to be rising in power, a fact which has given rise to very ominous rumors of his return. His floating Necropolis, Naxxramas, hovers above the Eastern Plaguelands, further bolstering his army. Arthas' lieutenant, the Lich Kel'Thuzad, commands this 40-man raid instance. Though very little has been revealed about Arthas' role in World of Warcraft, it has been confirmed that the continent of Northrend will be the primary focus of the second expansion pack, Wrath of the Lich King. Northrend houses the Frozen Throne and the ruins of the Nerubian kingdom Azjol-Nerub. Many fans of Warcraft III believe that if Blizzard keeps true to the continuity of the story, that Arthas, if included in this rumored potential expansion, would probably be the most powerful single unit in the entire game. This is based on his single-handed defeat of Illidan, who is arguably the second most powerful character in the story, and also because Arthas has now ascended to a completely new level of power that is above and beyond any other non-monster, humanoid character in the Warcraft universe.
