Greiser joined the Nazi party and SA in 1929 and the SS in 1931. He was the Senate President (Senatspräsident) of the Free City of Danzig (now Gdańsk, Poland) (19351939) and the administrator (Reichsstatthalter und Gauleiter) of Reichsgau Wartheland (19391945). Greiser typified the brutality exhibited by officials of Nazi Germany to the Poles. He was an ardent racist who enthusiastically persued an 'ethnic cleansing' program to rid the Warthegau of Poles and to resettle the 'cleansed' areas with ethnic Germans. This was along the lines of the racial theories espoused by SS Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler. Mass expulsions of Poles from the Warthegau to the General Government and summary executions were the norm. After the war, the Poles tried him for war crimes. His plea that he was only following orders did not hold up as it was shown that other Gauleiters did not follow a similar policy – for example Albert Forster, Gauleiter of Danzig-West Prussia (the other German-annexed section of occupied Poland), simply declared all Poles in his area of responsibility proficient in the German to be Germans. After Greiser was convicted, he was paraded around the city of Poznan in a cage before being hanged. Arthur Greiser was born in Schroda, Posen on 22 January 1897, the son of a civil servant.
From 1930 Greiser was deputy district leader of the NSDAP in Danzig and leader of the Party faction in the district.
Greiser had a fl record of cruelty towards the Polish population, advocating in a letter to Himmler of 1 May 1942 that tubercular Poles be sent for “special treatment” to Chelmno death camp.

On 1 May 1942, Gauleiter Arthur Greiser, head of the district known as the Warthegau in the former Polish territories annexed to Germany after the campaign in September 1939, wrote a letter to Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler, which is partially transcribed on page 18 of Kogon/Langbein/Rückerl et al, Nationalsozialistische Massentötungen durch Giftgas.
Greiser’s enlightening response ran: ‘I myself do not believe that the Fuhrer needs to be asked again in this matter, especially since at out last discussion with regard to the Jews he told me that I could proceed with these according to my own judgement’.
The correspondence between Greiser and Himmler on the subject, dated between 1 May and 3 December 1942, is in the personal file of Arthur Greiser in the Berlin Document Center (hereafter BDC).
