Arturo Umberto Illia Francesconi (August 4, 1900 _ January 18, 1983) was President of Argentina from 12 October 1963 to 28 June 1966. A member of the Radical Civic Union, he was a committed anti_Peronist.


From 1940 to 1943 he was vice governor of the province of Córdoba and in 1948 was elected to the National Assembly. In 1962 he was elected as governor of Córdoba, only to have the election result anulled. In 1963 he was selected as the Radical Party's candidate in the Presidential Elections and he defeated Oscar Alende to become President.


During his presidency he ended foreign ownership of Argentina's oil industry but had problems with the Peronist General Confederation of Labour, the United States over the oil industry and a drought which affected beef production.


In 1966 his government was overthrown by the military.
