Premise The main plot of the show follows a couple, accidentally separated for 38 years, who are brought back together again by chance. As a young man Lt. Lionel Hardcastle (played by Geoffrey Palmer) was sent to Korea in 1953 leaving behind Nurse Jean Pargetter (Judi Dench). He wrote her a letter which was lost in the postal system and never delivered (thus giving her no way to contact him). Having lost touch, they went their separate ways for nearly four decades — Jean married David, but he died and Lionel married Margaret, but they divorced. Often considered by its audience to be a rather "polite and quaint" dramedy, ATGB endeavored to turn negative preconceptions on their ears by upending stereotypes of everything from the elderly to members of motorbike gangs. But this polite show was not without its target. In one infamous story arc, the show repeatedly made sport of Americans (as movie makers) by stereotyping Americans as being brash, rude, inconsiderate and interested only in material gain. Given that the show was produced for a British audience, it's likely that casting Americans as two dimensional foils was considered a safe measure at the time by its producers. This is considered by many (particularly the show's growing American audience) to be a rather unfortunate deviation from what was an otherwise a positive show that seemed to pride itself on its ability to make compassionate all manner of society while showing that things are not always as they seem.
Production Nine series with a total of 64 episodes were produced. The regular run for the show was completed with an hour-long final episode in 2002. In 2005, two episodes were made for broadcast over the Christmas period, and they were broadcast on 26 December and 30 December. In addition to the As Time Goes By regular cast, David Oyelowo made an appearance as Lionel's long-lost "son".
