Ascension Parish is a parish located in the state of Louisiana. The parish seat is Donaldsonville and as of 2000, the population is 76,627.

Geography

The parish has a total area of 784 km2 (303 mi2). 755 km2 (292 mi2) of it is land and 29 km2 (11 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 3.75% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 76,627 people, 26,691 households, and 20,792 families residing in the parish. The population density is 101/km2 (263/mi2). There are 29,172 housing units at an average density of 39/km2 (100/mi2). The racial makeup of the parish is 77.39% White, 20.28% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.99% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 2.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 26,691 households out of which 42.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.10% are married couples living together, 13.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.10% are non-families. 18.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.85 and the average family size is 3.25.


In the parish the population is spread out with 30.10% under the age of 18, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 32.60% from 25 to 44, 20.20% from 45 to 64, and 7.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 96.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.50 males.


The median income for a household in the parish is $44,288, and the median income for a family is $50,626. Males have a median income of $41,109 versus $23,054 for females. The per capita income for the parish is $17,858. 12.90% of the population and 10.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.30% of those under the age of 18 and 15.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Ascension Parish Economy (2349 words)
Ascension Parish consists of an area of 312 square miles, or 192,006 acres and is located in the terrace and Mississippi flood plain region of southeast Louisiana.
It is bound on the north by Bayou Manchac and East Baton Rouge Parish; on northeast by the Amite River, Bayou Pierre, Petite Amite River, Blind River and Livingston Parish; on the east by St. John the Baptist; on the south by St. James and Assumption Parish; and on the west by Iberville Parish.
Ascension is bordered on the north by Iberville and Ascension Parishes, on the east by St. James and Lafourche Parishes, on the south by Terrebonne and St. Mary Parishes, and on the West by St. Martin and Iberia Parishes.
Ascension Catholic Church (1426 words)
The new Ascension Church in Oak Park recently dedicated by His Eminence, the Cardinal (Mundelein) is a remarkably congruous example of the Italian Romanesque style of architecture, every detail being in perfect keeping with the design of the structure.
Ascension Church was designed by the firm of Meyer and Cook, architects, while the contractor was Patrick Warren of the Mutual Construction Company.
Ascension Parish in Oak Park is a Catholic community called to proclaim, reflect on, and live the Gospel.
