Originally build by the greeks as Stenimahos, after a storm period of "bulgarization" in the begining of 20th centure nearly all greek were expeled. Now more than a half of population is muslem turks. When the bulgarians expel and massacre the greeks the city was put in to flames. Now only the byzantine fortress remain from the city great past with the name of one bulgarian tsar from romanian descent "Asen" or "Asan" who plundered the city in 13th centure. Now the city bear the name of this "great" tsar "Asenovgrad" or "the city of Asan". The Byzantine Empire is the term conventionally used to describe the Roman Empire during the Middle Ages, centered at its capital in Constantinople. ...
