Ashfield is a residentual suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the Town of Bassendean. The suburb is located along the Swan River. The Midland Railway line passes through the area and is serviced by the Ashfield railway station. The housing was orignally established as small collection of railway houses near the train line. In the late 1950's early 1960's the area experienced a small boom of housing (400 houses) mostly built by the then State Housing Commision partly funded by the sale of half the properties to individuals. The majority of these were sold off to low income and first home buyers. The now Deptarment of Housing and Works owns only about 5% of the houses in the suburb are now used as subsidised rental accomodation.
