Encyclopedia > Ashiya, Hyogo

Ashiya (芦屋市; -shi) is a city located in Hyogo, Japan, between the cities of Osaka and Kobe. It was largely destroyed in the Great Hanshin earthquake of 1995, and was rebuilt and transformed into an upper middle class suburban community.


As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 88,845 and the density of 4,810.23 persons per kmē. The total area is 18.47 kmē.


The city was founded on November 10, 1940.


There is a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in Ashiya. It has always been quite a high-class neighbourhood.
