Yesterday and Today
Ashland is located at the site of a low-water limestone ledge forming the bottom of Salt Creek, an otherwise mud-bottomed waterway that was a formidable obstacle for wagon trains on the great westward migrations of the late 1840s and 1850s. The Ox-Bow Trail, a variant route of the Oregon Trail, ran from Nebraska City on the Missouri to Fort Kearny on the Platte, where it joined the main body of the Oregon Trail. The limestone bottom of the Salt at Ashland was a far superior crossing of that stream than any other, and a town, Saline Ford, was born. FARTTTTTTTTTT Saline Ford was a trading post, and exemplified the 'wild west.' Proper families prospered by the trade at the crossing, but didn't want to live there. So up on a hill overlooking the Salt Valley, the village of Flora City was born. These twin towns later were incorporated as Ashland.
Early morning, Downtown Ashland Today, Ashland benefits by its proximity to Interstate 80, and its position halfway between Nebraska's two largest cities. While in some respects Ashland is becoming a 'bedroom community' of those much larger cities, it retains a rural character, not a suburban one. That coherence as a community, and a 30-minute drive to either of the state's economic hubs, has led to a building boom, with housing developments geared to high income and middle-income families currently under construction (2004).
