Ashland County is a county located in the state of Wisconsin. As of 2000, the population is 16,866. Its county seat is Ashland6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,941 km˛ (2,294 mi˛). 2,703 km˛ (1,044 mi˛) of it is land and 3,237 km˛ (1,250 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 54.49% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 16,866 people, 6,718 households, and 4,279 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km˛ (16/mi˛). There are 8,883 housing units at an average density of 3/km˛ (8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 87.10% White, 0.21% Black or African American, 10.35% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 1.69% from two or more races. 1.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 6,718 households out of which 30.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.60% are married couples living together, 10.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.30% are non-families. 30.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the county, the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 11.20% from 18 to 24, 25.80% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 15.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 97.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.10 males.
