The Hindu : An acid test for Ashutosh Gowarikar (352 words)
Bollywood whiz kid Ashutosh Gowarikar's new film ``Swades'', is probably Hindi film industry's best-kept secret today, but for the folks in the sleepy hill town of Panchgani, set atop the smoky blue Sahyadri ranges, it is part of their everyday lives.
Ashutosh, whose last film, "Lagaan," brought Indian films within a whisker's distance of bagging an Oscar a couple of years ago and the entire cast of ``Swades'', have been staying at a local hotel here since January 15 for an extensive outdoor shoot of the film.
The $ 6 million film is being funded by the UTV Motion Pictures and is perhaps the acid test for Gowarikar whose stock in the capricious Hindi film industry shot up to dizzy heights after the roller-coaster success of "Lagaan." Predictably, he is unwilling to talk about the film.
CNN.com - Asutosh Gowarikar Interview Transcript - July 2, 2002 (2925 words)
Ashutosh Gowarikar is the director of "Lagaan" – the first Hindi-language film to be nominated for an Oscar since 1958.
GOWARIKAR: Well I was expecting a certain level of it, because when I wrote the script, and while making it, I had a certain degree of confidence that this is going to appeal definitely to a certain section.
GOWARIKAR: I think extremely, I think you need to use cinema as a tool to spread first an awareness before we educate because a lot of times what happens is that the masses aren't even aware of the deeper meanings of a particular issue, we need to first make them aware.
