The final rounds of the 1968 Asian Cup marked the last time that the competition was played on a round-robin league basis and saw the emergence of Iran as a continental football force.
The Saudis, playing in their fifth consecutive Asian Cup final, were keen to avenge their hammering by Japan in the group stage, but Shigeyoshi Mochizuki’s 29th minute strike proved to be the only goal of the final as the Japanese won 1-0.
