Aspermont is a town located in Stonewall County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,021. It is the county seat of Stonewall County6.


Geography

Aspermont is located at 33°8'21" North, 100°13'42" West (33.139235, _100.228281)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.4 km² (2.1 mi²). 5.4 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,021 people, 418 households, and 282 families residing in the town. The population density is 190.4/km² (493.2/mi²). There are 507 housing units at an average density of 94.6/km² (244.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 85.99% White, 4.31% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 7.25% from other races, and 1.96% from two or more races. 13.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 418 households out of which 27.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.4% are married couples living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% are non-families. 30.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.90.


In the town the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 22.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 82.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.0 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $25,893, and the median income for a family is $31,172. Males have a median income of $24,904 versus $13,971 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,060. 22.3% of the population and 17.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 37.5% of those under the age of 18 and 11.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Aspermont (1990 population, 1,299) remained the county seat as well as the commercial center for ranching, farming, and petroleum operations, while Old Glory (125) was the center of the ranching operations in the eastern section.
