Aspinwall is a borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 2,960.


Geography

Aspinwall is located at 40°29'35" North, 79°54'11" West (40.493018, -79.903191)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.0 km˛ (0.4 mi˛). 0.9 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 10.81% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,960 people, 1,499 households, and 728 families residing in the borough. The population density is 3,463.2/km˛ (8,904.9/mi˛). There are 1,584 housing units at an average density of 1,853.3/km˛ (4,765.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the borough is 98.11% White, 0.27% African American, 0.03% Native American, 0.91% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,499 households out of which 18.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.3% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 51.4% are non-families. 46.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.97 and the average family size is 2.84.


In the borough the population is spread out with 18.3% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 34.1% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 76.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 73.4 males.


The median income for a household in the borough is $41,993, and the median income for a family is $58,750. Males have a median income of $45,231 versus $34,180 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $31,344. 5.9% of the population and 6.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.1% of those under the age of 18 and 10.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The Aspinwalls were one of the early families to settle in Brookline, Peter Aspinwall having bought land from William Colborne in 1650, and built a house near the present intersection of St. Paul St. and Aspinwall Ave.
Aspinwall Hill, like Corey Hill and most of the other hills in Brookline and Boston, is a drumlin: a hill composed of boulders and debris that had been accumulated as a result of the progress of a glacier, and then deposited all in one place when the glacier melted.

Bolton writes, “Corey, Aspinwall, Fisher, Singletree and several smaller hills, are of the same shape and have a common northwest southeast trend (due to the glacier's direction in passing through the area) their longer axes being parallel to one another and to the striae on the rocks".
