The AGC started as a group of independent churches in Ontario joined together by a charter during the 1890s under the leadership of P. W. Philpott. Originally, they were known as the Christian Workers' Church of Canada, but in order to differentiate itself from similarly named, but theological differing groups, were renamed the Associated Gospel Churches. The majority of AGC member churches are located in Ontario but AGC can be in provinces found across Canada.
