Association with Girls Sport Victoria (GSV)

In 1999, Christine Briggs, Principal of Melbourne Girls Grammar School hosted a historic meeting of Principals of girls’ schools at the Lyceum Club. She was impelled to call the meeting after receiving a letter of invitation from the Associated Public Schools of Victoria (APS) inviting her to put Melbourne Girls Grammar’s sporting fortunes with this group. Many (APS) boys’ schools had introduced coeducation and were finding it a challenge to provide strong interschool sports experiences for their girls. As the oldest schools association, the (APS) felt it was in a strong position to attract girls’ schools to its ranks. Christine was concerned that the (APS) saw girls’ schools as the solution to their sports needs, but saw that girls’ schools sports were fragmented into so many associations, that the (APS) would think their approach might be successful. Out of this encounter, GSV was formed separate to the APS. Carey Baptist Grammar School - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (1410 words)
The name of the school is derived from that of the world famous missionary William Carey who, as a scholar, linguist, botanist and philanthropist set a standard of emulation by all young people.
The present property with the house 'Urangeline' was purchased for the princely sum of £14,000 and the School opened on February 13, 1923, with an enrollment of 68 boys.
In 1957 Carey was invited to join the prestigious Associated Public Schools of Victoria, which comprises 11 significant Victorian independent schools and provides the forum for many of the interschool sporting competitions in which Carey participates.
