The Assumption Cathedral (Thai อาสนวิหารอัสสัมชัญ) is the principal Roman catholic church of Thailand, located in the Bang Rak district of Bangkok. It is the main church of the Archdiocese of Bangkok. It was visited by Pope John Paul II during his trip to Thailand in 1984. The cathedral was build in romanesque style during 1910 to 1918, when it replaced an earlier church at the location dated back to 1822. The area had been used for missionary buildings since 1860. During World War II in 1942, buildings and Christian community around it were destroyed by bombing. The cathedral was severely damaged requiring extensive restoration shortly later.
