The Assyrian Patriotic Party was established in 1973 in Baghdad. This party entered into an official alliance with the Assyrian Democratic Movement in 1991. The party is based in Dahuk, northern Iraq. Problems with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) reportedly surfaced in 1999, when the KDP closed the party's offices for four days. The party was critical of the Iraqi National Congress in that year for its apparent disregard for the Assyrian role in the opposition. Iraq seems to be a multi-party system, with numerous parties in which no one party often has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalition governments.

Those Assyrians residing within the "Assyrian Triangle" have been especially targeted in an effort to further intimidate Assyrians and to permanently alter the demography of the region.
Assyrians believe that this demographic alteration of the northern provinces by the Bahdinanis is a crude scheme to sell themselves as the sole heirs to any future confederacy in northern Iraq.
With continued attacks against Assyrians and their political parties, more Assyrian political organizations are weighing the option of boycotting future proceedings of the INC. With the APP office closure the KDP has apparently signaled its intention to intensify threats and persecution of Assyrians within their areas in order to stifle legitimate Assyrian political expression.
