Encyclopedia > Asterix at the Olympic Games

Asterix at the Olympic Games is an extremely effective satire on performance enhancing drug taking in sport.

While out hunting, Asterix and Obelix run across a sports champion of one of the local Roman garrisons who is to participate in the Olympic Games. Due to their preceeding comsumption of magic potion, they beat the Roman athlete in everything he attempts, temporarily breaking his resolve. Later on, the Gauls decide to participate in the Games as well, under the view that - as part of the Roman world - they are legally Romans. They later arrive in Greece and are entered in the list of participants, much to the surprise of the Greeks and to the disconcertion of the Romans.

Eventually the Romans file a protest about the magic potion, which is banned by the Olympic officials; this decision would seem to put an end to the Gauls' attempts to win the gold medal (the Romans being much fitter and better trained). However, in an ingenious twist, Asterix and Getafix leak the location of the potion to the Romans, who, in their desire to win, all take the banned substance and are disqualified, leaving Asterix as the winner by default. The Olympic Games, or Olympics, is an international multi-sport event taking place every four years and comprising summer and winter games. ... A shrewd, cunning little warrior; all perilous missions are immediately entrusted to him. ...

But after the Gauls' return home, it is revealed that Asterix had given the victor's olive twig to the Roman athlete he and Obelix had irked at the beginning of the story, since the latter had needed it mor than him. And for once, Caesar is pleased, and the legionary and his centurio are promoted.
