Astipalea (or Astypalea or Astypalaia, Αστυπάλαια) is a Greek island with 1.238 residents (2001 Census). It belongs to the Dodecanese, an island group of twelve major islands in the southeastern Aegean Sea. The coasts of Astypalea are rocky with many small pebly beaches. A small band of land of roughly 10 kilometres, almost separates the island in two sections. The capital and main harbour of the island is Astypalea or Hora, as it is called by the locals. Astypalea has ferry connections with Piraeus and the other islands of the Dodecanese and flight connections with Athens. Astypalaia is a butterfly-shaped island -a narrow isthmus a mere 100 meters wide connecting its two winds- with citrus groves and decent mountainous walking country.
The Castle in Hora, that was built by Quirini -a Venetian family that ruled Astypalaia between 1207 and 1522-, Panagia Portaitissa church in Hora, the Archaeological Museum in Hora, Agios Ioannis monastery 12 Km from Hora, the well preserved Roman Baths with floor mosaics of zodiac signs.
It is the second largest settlement in Astypalaia, a fishing harbour, with some beaches accessible around the bay, and it is surrounded by olive groves.

According to mythology Astypalaia was the daughter of Phoenix and Perimede and the sister of Europe.
Astypalaia and the God of the Seas, Poseidon, had two sons, Anceus who became king of Samos, and Eurypylos who became king of Kos.
