Atakora is the North-West region of The Republic of Benin is a nation of western Africa, formerly known as Dahomey. It is the most mountanous region of Benin, and the birth place of the president, Mathieu Kérékou. It is a much drier area of the country than the south, with 3 major seasons, a Rainy Season that runs from May or June to September or October, a A dry, dusty wind blowing south-west and west off the Sahara into the Gulf of Guinea from December to February. When the Harmattan blows hard, it can push dust and sand all the way to South America. In Nigeria, people say that men and animals are becoming increasingly irritable... Harmattan season of cool, dry winds that runs from October or November to February, and a hot, Famine season that runs from February to April.


Major towns in the Atakora include Djougou, Natitingou and Tanguietta, and famous sites to visit include the Tata Somba houses, the Pendjari National Park, and various wateralls.



Benin is subdivided into 12 departements. In 1999 the previous 6 departements were each split into two halves to form the current 12. The new 6 departements havent been assigned a capital yet.
