It featured three chips, consisting of a Motorola 68000 running at 16Mhz, an object processor called the Panther, and an Ensoniq sound processor called Otis, featuring 32 sound channels. The Panther could display 8,192 colors from an 18-bit palette of 262,144 colors, and supported 65,535 sprites of any size simultaneously. Previous to the Panther decision, Atari were also toying with an ST based video game console, but this wouldn't have competed technically with the newer consoles now dominating the market.
Panther was very close to actually going into production, but was shelved at the last minute as a parallel project within Atari showed much more promise and much more power - that project gave birth to the Atari Jaguar nearly 2 years later.
Apparently, Atari was developing the Panther and Jaguar consoles in parallel, but the Jaguar suddenly began to overtake it's stable-mate.
