Athleague (Irish Áth Liag ) is a town on the River Suck in the west of Ireland in County Roscommon, near the town of Roscommon. The town has a mill, and a restored church, now a visitor centre. The current mayor is Darragh Connaughton, the 17th mayor of the town. The mayor's family are desendant from wealty tillage farmers and gold miners (gold was found in Creggs, a small village on the outskirts of the town in 1672), this local history is well known to the people of Athleague. The town is also very well known for the widespread growth of Psychedelic ("magic") mushrooms in the surrounding countryside. The number of inhabitants who regularly use these natural hallucinogens is not know but it is thought to be a significantly high percentage. One famous local, known only as the Notorious Bastard, has often been found attempting to scale the old Protestant church (now converted to a visitor centre and known as Athleague Angling Centre), and also attempting to copulate with local farm animals while on a high from these mushrooms. Despite his grim reputation the Notorious Bastard has proved to be a major pull factor in attracting tourists as well as the growth of recreational fishing in the area on the River Suck. Twenty five pupils at the three teacher school in Athleague gather in front of their school’s computer and webcam once a week where they can see and speak to their music tutor, thanks to a highspeed broadband internet connection.
Principal of Athleague NS, Mr Brian McGovern said he was honoured that the school was chosen to take part in the pilot project which he explained was run by the Athlone Education Centre.
While music is taught in Athleague NS as part of the school curriculum there is no specific tin whistle class, but as Mr McGovern explained the new technology is going down a treat with the students.
