Athos (( )) is the Home planet of the Athosians in Stargate Atlantis. It was one of the planets culled every few hundred years by the Wraith. The Athosians once lived in a ruined city on the planet and were technologically advanced. They still possess some advanced technology, but due to the threat by the Wraith, they were living in a pre-industrial culture, in portable camps which they moved to confuse the Wraith. Athos was the first planet visited by the Atlantis expedition, when they were looking for a safe site to evacuate the city. However, the planet was atacked by the Wraith, and the survivors were evacuated to Atlantis. They lived in the city for 3 months, but eventually moved to the planet's mainland. Athos’ monastic community founded in 963 AD (by a monk named Athanasios the Athonite), with the establishment of the Great Lavra monastery (still the most prominent and largest).
The monasteries of Athos were protected by the Byzantine Emperors until their 15th century collapse and the occupation of Islamic Ottoman Empire.
It is my theory that the Wraiths did not attack Athos because some of the SGA team went into the ancestors’ city, but because Sheppard had activated Teyla’s necklace, which he had found in the cave.

There was a large ruined city on the planet and the people appear technologically advanced to the point of pre-industrialism but after the last "Great Attack", they abandoned city living and reverted to an agrarian society to avoid detection by the Wraith.
The Athosians moved their camps to confuse invaders, and in the past, were known to use nearby caves to hide in and document the attacks on their planet.
On the even rarer occasion of a funeral, the body is put in the middle of a stone ring (a representation of the Stargate).
