Atkinson County is a county located in the Georgia. It is named for William Y. Atkinson, Democratic governor of Georgia from 1894 to 1898. As of 2000, the population is 7,609. The county's county seat is Pearson, Georgia6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 891 km˛ (344 mi˛). 876 km˛ (338 mi˛) of it is land and 16 km˛ (6 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.76% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,609 people, 2,717 households, and 1,980 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km˛ (22/mi˛). There are 3,171 housing units at an average density of 4/km˛ (9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 66.79% White, 19.61% Black or African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 12.03% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 16.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 2,717 households out of which 38.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.10% are married couples living together, 12.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.10% are non-families. 23.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.78 and the average family size is 3.27.


In the county the population is spread out with 30.30% under the age of 18, 10.90% from 18 to 24, 29.60% from 25 to 44, 19.90% from 45 to 64, and 9.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 98.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.40 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $26,470, and the median income for a family is $32,688. Males have a median income of $24,763 versus $18,434 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,178. 23.00% of the population and 18.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.10% of those under the age of 18 and 31.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
