The Center was developed in part as an aspect of the city's ongoing attempt to recreate itself as a year-round destination rather than a mere summer resort -- the same thought process that later led to its development as the first major gambling center in the U.S. outside of Nevada in modern times. It is best-known as the site of the Miss America Scholarship Pageant. It was also the host of the 1964Democratic National Convention that nominated Lyndon Baines Johnson for President only months following the assassination of his predecessor, John F. Kennedy. It was also the venue of the former Boardwalk Bowl college football game.
A new Convention Center opened in the late 1990s, and the historic building became known as Boardwalk Hall. It is the home of the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies of the East Coast Hockey League, and it also hosts the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association high school wrestling championships.
