New York - New Jersey Highlands (6392 words)
The Highlands area was settled by colonists beginning in the 1700s, with the rich iron resources in the Highlands as the main impetus for settlement.
The Highlands support 24 of the 29 middle and long-distance migrant birds whose numbers have declined significantly in the Northeast, as indicated by analysis of the breeding bird survey, and 26 of the 35 long-distance migrants ranked in a recent Partners in Flight study as of highest concern in the Northeast.
South of the moraine and core area in New Jersey, the focus should be on preserving the existing forested ridges and maintaining the network of agricultural lands and grasslands in the valleys.
