History

Atmakur is the Mandal and Taluka head quarters. It has about 500 years of rich heritage and culture. There are several places of historical importance in and around the town. During 16th Century, it was under the rule of Vijayanagara Empire. Since then, it was under the rule of differt Kings and Kingdoms. SriKrishna Devaraya of Vijayanagara Empire was one among the prominent emperors who ruled this area. Several Temples and Water Ponds were constructed under his rule. Many of them are ruined but still we can see the remains. We can see AlagiriRajaSwamy Devasthanam which is under doomed state. The Atmakur Water Pond(Atmakur Cheruvu) is still the main source for agriculture. Besides these, there are a number of Temples, Mosques and Churches. Though, there are different people from different Religions and Castes, they are living together with fraternity and we can find a good example for 'Unity in Diversity'. Atmakur was earlier known as Kondapuram. Education

There are a number of schools and colleges in Atmakur. Students from the nearby villages come here for their education. There are about 50 Schools(Anganwadi, primary, upperprimary and high schools), 10 Junior Colleges, 3 Degree colleges, 1 B.Ed College in the town and 1 Industrial Training Center.

 One important thing is that some of the government high schools in the mandal are giving quality education compared to private schools. For example Z.P.H.School of karatampadu(a small village in the mandal) is in second place among Zillaparishat high schools in the Nellore ditrict.Another Z.P.school which is in good competition in mandal is Z.P.H.School of Bateepadu(village in the mandal).The present private colleges are not in a state to provide quality education needed by the students to achieve good ranks in the competitive exams like EAMCET..etc. There is an immense need of establishing good colleges in the mandal ,for the students to make their dreams come true.
