Encyclopedia > Atmospheric Radiation Measurement

The Department of Energy's Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program uses state-of-the-art active and passive remote sensing instrumentation to study the fundamental physics related to interactions between clouds and radiative feedback processes in the atmosphere. With instrumentation located in three different climate regions around the world, plus a mobile facility for accessing different climates, datasets provided by the ARM Program are used to improve the treatment of clouds and radiation processes in climate models. The DOE is one of the biggest funders of science research in the US The United States Department of Energy National Laboratories are a system of research facilities and laboratories funded and controlled by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) for the purpose of advancing science and helping promote... A black hole concept drawing by NASA. The primary goal of the ARM Program is to improve the treatment of cloud and radiation physics in global climate models in order to improve the climate simulation capabilities of these models.
The resulting new ARM Climate Research Facility (ACRF) has been designated a national user facility for the purpose of providing this unique asset for the study of global change to a broader national and international research community.
