The name Attical is thought to have come from the Irish "place of the Hazels". There are still some wild hazel trees particularly on the banks of Yellow water river. Salmon travel up the two rivers (White and Yellow water) every Autumn particularly after a very heavy rain. At the end of the Ice age a deposit of stones is thought to have been left that runs through Attical. This is known locally as the Stoney Rigg. You can see the remains of this on Slieve Muck, and it is said to flow down to Green castle.
