Lukacs is best known for paintings that depict rough masculine figures such as gay skinheads and military cadets, both in uniform and nude. His work has sometimes been denounced as pornographic. While Lukacs deals with gay subject matter his work is far more than pornographic. His paintings often reference the compositions and themes of Degas and Caravaggio as well as the compositional devices of the miniature painters and illustrators of India and the Middle east. To say that his work is pornographic because it depicts gay sex is as wrong headed as saying that Degas, Reubens, Titian or Velasquez were purveyors of pornography in their creation of images that appealed to heterosexual viewers.

Attila Richard Lukacs > Press > Parachute (1045 words)
It is a difficult thing to dehistoricize such imagery, and while Lukacs is at pains to downplay the flirtation with the far right and emphasizes his paintings' erotic flair, it seems unavoidable that his work would be seen by some as ethically questionable.
In conversation, Lukacs emphasizes that he is just a painter, and that any interpretation of a group such as these nine men is actually indicative of the viewer's intent.
This is not to say that Lukacs is incapable of camp - Labours in Natural History, his wax figure of a skinhead fitted out with wires taken from Berlin's major electric plant during the Nazi era, is openly provocative - the word "hate" is written on the knuckles of the figure's left hand.
Attila Richard Lukacs and Charles Rea (1932 words)
Although Attila Richard Lukacs and Charles Rea have been exhibiting their work in Vancouver for several years, they are especially recognized for their participation in Young Romantics, a major painting exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1985.
Attila Richard Lukacs fuses an almost classical style of painting with gritty and raw brushwork reminiscent of the abstract expressionists.
Lukacs and Rea, along with six other new painters, were abruptly boosted into national attention and considerable local notoriety by a single show last year at the Vancouver Art Gallery, VAG curator Scott Watson's Young Romantics.
