Auburn Hills is a city located in Oakland County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 19,837. The city was formed in 1983 from the now defunct United States headquarters of Mercedes Benz and the US headquarters for DaimlerChrysler. It is also home to The Palace of Auburn Hills


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 43.0 km˛ (16.6 mi˛). 43.0 km˛ (16.6 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.12% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 19,837 people, 8,064 households, and 4,604 families residing in the city. The population density is 461.1/km˛ (1,194.5/mi˛). There are 8,822 housing units at an average density of 205.1/km˛ (531.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 75.92% White, 13.22% African American, 0.32% Native American, 6.33% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.56% from other races, and 2.61% from two or more races. 4.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 8,064 households out of which 26.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.0% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.9% are non-families. 33.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.92.


In the city the population is spread out with 20.4% under the age of 18, 15.9% from 18 to 24, 38.1% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.5 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $51,376, and the median income for a family is $60,849. Males have a median income of $45,686 versus $34,015 for females. The per capita income for the city is $25,529. 6.3% of the population and 3.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.4% of those under the age of 18 and 4.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
