Encyclopedia > Audacious class aircraft carrier

The Audacious class aircraft carrier was a class of ship proposed by the United Kingdom government in the 1930s - 1940s. Four ships of the Audacious-class were laid down during World War II as part of the British naval buildup during that conflict. However, two were cancelled at the end of hostilities, and the remaining two were suspended. Work on the first ship, HMS Eagle began in 1942, with a launch in 1946 and commission in October 1951. Work on the more famous Ark Royal started in 1943, leading to a 1950 launch and commission in 1955.

Aircraft Carriers (2460 words)
The carrier was underway in the Gulf of Thailand en route to a port visit in Guam when the incident flared, resulting in the death of the Chinese pilot and forcing the damaged Orion to land on Hainan Island.
Carriers can withstand considerable damage, thanks to their large size, the distribution of redundant systems throughout the ship, their high-strength steel and sophisticated armor, their ballistic plating, and their underwater protective systems.
The carrier's ability to withstand severe punishment was--unfortunately and unintentionally--vividly demonstrated in 1969 when nine 500-pound bombs (the equivalent of six Soviet cruise missiles at the time) exploded on the flight deck of the USS Enterprise during a fire resulting from the detonation of a rocket's warhead.
Centaur class aircraft carrier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (722 words)
The Centaur class of aircraft carriers of the British Royal Navy was the last of the light fleet carrier designs started during the closing years of World War II.
Originally conceived as a class of eight vessels, with the end of hostilities, work on all the ships was suspended and four units were cancelled outright.
With the extended completion periods of the units, and the rapid advances in aircraft carrier design at the time of their building, it was almost inevitable that large differences should be seen between the various members of the class.
