Threshold of hearing is the sound pressure level SPL of 20 µPa (micropascal) = 2 × 10-5 Pascal (Pa). This low threshold of amplitude (strength or sound pressure level) is frequency dependent. See the frequency curve at Absolute Threshold of Hearing.

Auditory threshold and hypoxia (3393 words)
Thresholds for 1, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 kHz tones were measured at levels of hypoxia equivalent to altitudes of 0, 1200, 2400 and 3700 m.
Threshold was defined as the average of the signal levels associated with the last eight reversals.
Thresholds averaged across all four subjects are plotted as a function of frequency and simulated altitude in Figure 1.
