Eu as barrister

Before her entrance into politics, Eu was the chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association. On the issue of the right-of-abode, at the time of the transfer of sovereignty to the People's Republic of China in 1997, she held a firm stance on the interpretation by the National People's Congress, and thus began to be known by many Hong Kong people. Eu decided to enter into politics in 2000, and was successful in gaining a Legislative Council seat at a byelection. Eu became an influential politician in Hong Kong since the day she entered politics. Article 23 Concern Group

In 2002, when the Hong Kong Government had intentions to introduce Article 23 legislation regarding state secrets and sedition, Eu, with other members of the Bar Association, including Alan Leong, Margaret Ng, Ronny Tong, formed the Basic Law Article 23 Concern Group. Before the draft Bill became public, Eu put forward strong opinions and statements concerning the extreme measures of Article 23. Her acumen in explaining her points about Article 23 not only increased the amount of Hong Kong residents participating in anti-Article 23 activities, it eventually led to her popularity increasing significantly after the July 1, 2003, demonstrations. Article 45 concern group

Concern started to grow among Hong Kong residents about Articles 45 and 68 of the Basic Law in 2004. In the meantime, uncertainties of how the future 2007 Chief Executive election and the 4th LegCo elections in 2008 would take place also raised concern. In 2004, partnering with Cyd Ho from The Frontier, Eu participated in the Legislative Council election on the same list at the Hong Kong Island constituency. The "Eu-Ho" pair obtained 73,844 votes; Eu obtained a seat, but Ho lost to Choy So Yuk, second in order on the list of the pro-Beijing DAB, by a mere 815 votes. This was seen as somewhat of a blunder, as ally Martin Lee had more than enough votes to be elected, and directly affected Cyd Ho's chances.
