Although Aulesti is the town´s current official name, Murelaga was its original name; or, in other words, Murelaga was the name given to the parochial district.
The parochial district of Aulesti, or Murelaga, was created in the XIIIth century with the aim of achieving the administrative and political unity of all the neighbourhoods.
The ancestors of Aulesti´s inhabitants were the basis and the directors of this unity; they were also the promoters of the patriarcalization of power, managing to rule over the whole region.

659 people live in Aulesti, the 34,8 % of the total population of the valley.
During the 70s and the 80s, Aulesti´s population decreased considerably, as unemployment forced people to go to the industrialised towns around the area, where there was a wider offer.
In 1966, there were 50 shepherds from Aulesti in the United States.
