Auraria was a small mining settlement in the Kansas Territory in the United States.
The name "Auraria" survives in Denver as the neighborhood along the west bank of Cherry Creek to the east bank of the South Platte River, bordered on the south by Colfax Avenue.
Auraria is easily confused with, but is entirely distinct from the City of Aurora, Denver's neighbor some six miles to the east.
Gold was first discovered in the area of Auraria, Dahlonega, and the Northeast Georgia Mountains by Hernando De Soto in the 1540's and the spainsh set up mining operation from the 1540's-early 1800's when the spainsh where drivin out of Georgia.
Auraria means "City of Gold in Latin, and Dahlonega in Cherokee means "Yellow" By 1830 the region had produced over 300 onuces of gold.
Auraria was the county seat form 1828-1832 with a population of over 1,000.
