Aurora is a town located in Beaufort County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 583.

Aurora is located at 35°18'5" North, 76°47'22" West (35.301476, _76.789461)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.7 km˛ (1.0 mi˛). 2.5 km˛ (0.9 mi˛) of it is land and 0.2 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 8.65% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 583 people, 265 households, and 169 families residing in the town. The population density is 236.9/km˛ (615.8/mi˛). There are 316 housing units at an average density of 128.4/km˛ (333.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 51.29% White, 47.51% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 1.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 265 households out of which 23.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.8% are married couples living together, 15.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% are non-families. 33.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.81.


In the town the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 23.0% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.7 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $25,917, and the median income for a family is $42,000. Males have a median income of $33,542 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,252. 20.9% of the population and 15.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.5% of those under the age of 18 and 16.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
