The Australian Chamber Orchestra is based in Sydney, but tours its programs to most major Australian cities. One of its founders in 1975 was former Sydney Symphony Orchestra principal cellist John Painter. Its Artistic Director since 1989 has been the charismatic Australian violinist Richard Tognetti. Much of its funding comes from corporate support and the Australia Council. In Sydney it performs in the City Recital Hall and Sydney Opera House. Founded in 1975, the AustralianChamberOrchestra is a national ensemble with an international reputation for artistic excellence -- the Washington Post called the group "one of the world's finest small orchestras" -- that embodies the sunny, youthful spirit of its homeland.
The AustralianChamberOrchestra has also released more than 15 CDs, which have won numerous Australian recording awards, and it is under long-term contract with Sony.
The chamber music series of Isserlis' devising are renowned, often appearing as a "festival within a festival," including his Mendelssohn project at the Salzburg Festival in 1997.
The AustralianChamberOrchestra, under the direction of violinist Richard Tognetti, is commonly regarded in Australia as a national treasure.
The orchestra's latest concert program consists of three works from the 20th century (now, as the T'ang Quartet reminded us recently, the last century) and one from the remoter reaches of the 19th.
The final work was Tognetti's setting for the orchestra of Schubert's string quartet known as "Death and the Maiden." This fattening out of the original work added texture and color, but somewhat at the expense of its driven austerity this arrangement does not really capture the morbid fascination of the quartet form.
