CNN.com - Austrian staff 'to resume strike' - Oct. 12, 2003 (489 words)
The airline managed to prevent major disruptions by rebooking passengers on other airlines and by using the planes and crew of other airlines, including that of two smaller airlines that belong to the Austrian Airlines Group -- Lauda Air and Austrian Arrows, until recently known as Tyrolean Airways.
Employees for the airline -- which recently shortened its name from "Austrian Airlines" to "Austrian" -- are striking to protest austerity measures planned by management.
Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel's government, dominated by the conservative and business-friendly People's Party, condemned the strikes and warned they would likely cause the airline to suffer the same fate as Swiss Air, which suffered heavy debts and ended up going bankrupt in 2002.
