Autocar is a weekly British automobile magazine published by Haymarket Magazines Limited. It is the oldest surviving car magazine in the world. It was launched as The Autocar "in the interests of the mechanically propelled road carriage" on November 2 1895 when, it is believed, there were only six or seven cars in the United Kingdom . It claims to have invented the road test in 1928 when it analysed the Austin Seven Gordon England Sunshine Saloon. It continues publishing weekly. Only strikes in the 1970s have interrupted its frequency. In 1988, it absorbed its long-time rival The Motor magazine, founded on January 28, 1903, briefly calling itself Autocar & Motor afterwards. In its famous Christmas numbers, it has tested exotic, fictional vehicles such as Santa's Sleigh as well as real 'vehicles' such as the aircraft carrier Ark Royal and Concorde supersonic aircraft. We are satisfied that in a small company such as Autocar Connaisseur, all drivers have "the reasonable potential for crossing the border",35 and that it would cause Autocar Connaisseur undue hardship if it could not test all of its drivers in accordance with American legislative requirements.
Devlin testified that Autocar Connaisseur was of the view that these actions are necessary because an employee who knowingly comes to work with alcohol or drugs in his system so fundamentally breaches the trust between employer and employee that there is no alternative but to terminate the employment relationship.
Finally, Autocar Connaisseur may also be able to terminate the employment of those individuals who fail to rehabilitate themselves after being afforded the reasonable opportunity to do so, although each of these situations would have to be carefully considered, on a case-by-case basis.
