Encyclopedia > Autopsy (band)

Autopsy were an influential death metal band founded in 1987 in the United States of America by Chris Reifert after he left Death. Beginning their career with the "Severed Survival" LP, the band started to later draw heavily on Trouble riffs and dark themes close in style to doom metal. The LP "Mental Funeral", often considered their finest hour, would showcase this new style to acclaimed result. Having completed a successful European tour, the band re-entered the studio to record "Fiend for Blood" which once more showed another shift in style to what has now become known as goregrind. Their main lyrical themes were gore and sickness, which was conveyed in their musical and vocal output as well. The band's next releases would see a amalgam of all 3 styles, each time becoming bleaker and heavier. They disbanded after the release of Shitfun in 1995. Reifert and Coralles continued in a similar style in Abscess.
