Description

Auxiliary crane ships are converted commercial container ships, equipped with pedestal cranes capable of lifting containers and other cargo. These are used to unload cargo from their own holds as well from other vessels at port facilities which do not have their own cargo handling capability. The first crane ship was completed as such in 1984, and a total of 10 vessels were converted through 1997. All were former commercial vessels. A crane onboard a Maritime Administration (MARAD) Auxiliary Crane Ship (T-ACS) is used to carefully lift and maneuver containers from a commercial container vessel during Operation Safe Port on June 8, 2005 in San Francisco Bay.
The three day exercise demonstrated the use of a MARAD Auxiliary Crane Ship (T-ACS) and its capability to safely remove containers suspected or known to contain contraband or weapons of mass destruction (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive) from a commercial containership while in a safe location, away from heavily populated areas and port complexes.
Then, MARAD would operate their crane ship to safely move the surrounding containers and remove the suspected container to another vessel or barge for further investigation or final disposition.
