Avalon Roberts (Calgary—Glenmore)

Roberts was born in Newfoundland and has lived in Calgary since 1980. She is a psychiatrist in private life, and is a former president of the Alberta Psychiatric Association (Calgary Herald, 27 June 2004). She is best known in Alberta as a health-care activist. She served as chairwoman of the Calgary Friends of Medicare, a group dedicated to the preservation of public health-care, during the early 2000s (Calgary Herald, 12 July 2001). She is the first cousin of Newfoundland and Labrador Lieutenant Governor Edward Roberts (St. John's Telegram, 24 June 2004). Roberts has argued that contracting out services to private clinics will likely result in increased costs for Alberta's health system (Calgary Herald, 6 December 2001), and in 2002 described a proposal for private surgery clinics in Alberta as "very dangerous" (Calgary Herald, 15 September 2002). In late 2003, she argued that Private-Public Partnerships in health care would likely result in greater expenses and less financial transparency (Calgary Herald, 2 November 2003).


Roberts campaigned for the Liberal Party of Canada in the 2004 federal election against Conservative leader Stephen Harper. She received assistance during the election from former Liberal cabinet minister Sheila Copps, despite the fact that Copps was on poor terms with Liberal leader Paul Martin in this period (Calgary Herald, 16 June 2004). Roberts argued that Harper and Alberta Premier Ralph Klein would create "havoc" with the Canadian health system in the event of a national Conservative victory (Calgary Herald, 18 June 2004). Roberts received 9,501 votes (18.40%) for a second place finish. During the 2004 election, she criticized Premier Klein for refusing to clarify his health-care plans (Calgary Herald, 11 November 2004). She later criticized Klein's "Third Way" plan to introduce some private services to the public system (Edmonton Journal, 12 August 2005). In 2005, Roberts arranged and presided over a Friends of Medicare symposium in Calgary (Edmonton Journal, 31 March 2005).

Avalon Hill was a game company that specialized in war or strategic board games.
In the 1970s, Avalon Hill branched out from wargames to publish a number of tabletop sports simulations, including the popular Statis Pro line which was based on the names and statistics of actual players.
Avalon Hill became a subsidiary of Monarch Avalon Printing in 1962 (as a way of repaying debts incurred by Roberts), which then ran it for the next 36 years.
