The Average White Band (also AWB) is a Scottish funk and R&B band. Original members included Alan Gorrie, Onnie McIntyre, Hamish Stuart, Roger Ball, Malcolm Duncan and Robbie McIntosh.

The band debuted in 1973 (see 1973 in music) at Eric Clapton's comeback concert. Their debut LP was Show Your Hand, which sold poorly. The follow-up, AWB, was a chart-topper which included "Pick Up the Pieces." On September 23, 1974 (see 1974 in music), McIntosh died of a heroin overdose. He was replaced by Steve Ferrone (of Bloodstone) for Cut the Cake (1975, see 1975 in music) and Soul Searching (1976, see 1976 in music), both big sellers. Their next LP, Benny & Us, was a collaboration with soul legend Ben E. King.

After several more albums, AWB's audience and sales dwindled and the group disbanded in 1982 (see 1982 in music). In 1985 Gorrie released a solo album, Sleepless Nights. Gorrie, Ball and McIntyre reunited in 1989 (see 1989 in music) to record Aftershock, and Ball left the band shortly after its release. Eliot Lewis (http://www.3dmusicbiz.com) co-wrote with Gorrie on this album and joined the band replacing lead singer, Hamish Stuart. Average White Band has continued recording (Soul Tattoo 1997, Face to Face, 1999) and touring since. When Eliot Lewis left AWB in September 2002 to pursue other musical opportunities, he was replaced by Klyde Jones (see AWB (http://www.averagewhiteband.com)). Their most recent release in April 2003 is entitled Living in Colour. Average White Band is the opening act for a double bill Michael McDonald (http://www.michaelmcdonald.com)/Hall and Oates (http://www.hallandoates.com) 2004 summer tour.

Current AWB lineup includes Alan Gorrie (bass, lead vocals), Klyde Jones (guitar, keyboard, lead vocals), Onnie McIntyre (guitar, vocals), Fred Vigdor (sax, keyboard, vocals) and Brian Dunne (drums).

Gorrie and McIntyre are the only remaining original members of the band.
