The positioning of Avila Beach leads to a nice climate, and a fairly warm ocean compared to the beaches around it. However, after an oil spill in the late 1990's, the town spent a significant amount of money to refurbish the beach areas, only to have tourism decline sharply after multiple shark attacks and shark sightings occurred in the region.
