Line of Lords and later Marquiss in Sicily. They member bear the family name of Aragó. The line was originated by the king Frederic II, that give the title of lord of Avola to his son Orland. Three sons of Orland were lords of Avola; Alphonse I, Frederic I and John I. The son of John, John II (+ c. 1451), was the following lord. John was not married, but has several bastard sons; one of them, John III, bear the title of lord of Avola. Deceased in 1471 and his succesor was his son Gaspar d'Aragó, lord of Avola and (from his mother Beatriu of Cruilles) lord of Terranova. Charles of Aragó, son of Gaspar, was the following and last lord of Avola and Terranova. Their title was converted to Marquis. As he has not male sons, the heir was his daughther Antonia that married with his cousin Francesco I, count of Castelvestrano (son of the count Gian Vicenzo Tagliavi, married with Beatrice, sister of Charles of Aragó) and then with Giovanni (brother of Francesco I) originating the family Tagliavia d'Aragona dukes of Terranova.
Avola, in the province of Siracusa, managed to revive after the terrible earthquake that in 1693 destroyed all the south-eastern side of Sicily.
Avola’s most attractive secular buildings include the Palazzo Ducale, near the Mother Church, flanked by a 1800’s clock-tower, and the 1800’s Palazzo di Città.
The site of Avola Antica, the ancient city, in the Monte Aquilone district, is of historical interest, with the ruins of the medieval city and features that testify to the existence of prehistoric settlements at the site.
