Axel Paulsen (1855-1938) was a Norwegian figure skater. He was the inventor of the axel jump in figure skating, where you take off on your left back outside edge (LBO) and do one and a half rotations in the air, landing on your right back outside edge (RBO). It is the hardest of all the jumps, but the easiest to recognize because it is the only jump with more than one rotation going forward.
