One of Turkey's most famous politicians he was elected into the Turkish parliament for the first time in 1957. In 1974 he became prime minister as the leader of "Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi" (the Republican People's Party). He gave the order of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in July 20, 1974. Ecevit was made a prisoner by the military junta after the coup on September 12, 1980.
